Who owns Canon in D? Why do you have to pay other people for the right to play this show? This show is a quest to present the Canopn using popular songs that are directly based on the chord changes. Combining themes from the Canon with the rhythm section rock out ‘Hook’ by Blues Traveler, and the both subtle and powerful ‘Cryin’ by Aerosmith, Pachelbel’s Paradigm includes music at the Grade 4 level, and optional narration that asks the question - Who’s music is this? We don‘t need to legally mention Pachelbel’s name to play this show, but we have to pay rights to current bands who just copied his changes?? That‘s the premise. It also stands alone just fine without narration.
You will need to clear performing/arranging rights for Hook and Cryin’ but it can be done.
Movement 1 - Canon Opener (1:56) LISTEN NOW
Starting with a light and airy pit intro, the winds enter on a fff hit to wake things up. From, the opener settles into an overture of Canon themes.
Movement II - Hook (2:03) LISTEN NOW
This is a combination of a twisted variation in 5/4, which leads to a quite literal rhythm section moment from the original that features dueling lead guitars and a harmonica solo (in F).
Movement III - Cryin’ (3:15)(2:03) LISTEN NOW
After a brief minuet based on the Canon, the percussion leads us into a pretty intense wind entrance, which releases into the ballad. Starting with a mellophone solo, the first part of the chart is pretty, and alternates between a triplet and 16th note feel. This builds to a battery break in the middle, a return to Cryin’ in a powerful rock ballad hit, and finally into recapitulations of the Pachelbel material from throughout the show.
